Good Coffee and a Overdose of Attitude

November 21, 2008 at 1:00 pm (Trident, service)

Had a pretty darn good americano at Trident.  And for good reason.  This shop has been around forever, has a well trained barista staff (in coffee making, at least), and as a result, a dedicated following.  But it would be hard for the service to be much worse.  ”Hi”?  ”Good morning”?  Friendly exchange?  Nope.  Just a snappy “what do you want?”.  Well, for starters, a barista that actually likes interacting with people, and second, a decent cup of coffee.  I guess 1 for 2 isn’t bad, considering many shops are a big goose egg.

I think this blog is better with me commenting…
My two cents about the Trident:
HORRIBLE drip coffee, could it be more over-extracted, bitter, sour, old, and burnt?

    Espresso is ok.

    Service is the worst.

Just because a place has been around for a long time doesn’t make it good.

I took my kid to Playgrounds yesterday and they had to brew the coffee since it was after 6 and they were out, one of the best cups I’ve had in MONTHS!

hey IB, aren’t you the same IB who was trying to ream us for propping Conscious Coffees and ripping Allegro? Guess what Playgrounds served? Thaz right, Conscious. So there.

Did, anyway. Playgrounds is up for sale. Very cheap from the numbers I’ve heard.

And you are right, this blog is better when you’re commenting. It’s even better when we’re posting more than once every few months.

how funny you should write about this. ive thought the same thing. the people who work there dont seem very friendly…. almost snobby or something. i thought maybe it was me, but perhaps not. i feel like a coffee shop isnt good if the atmosphere isnt friendly and welcoming.

Do they (Trident) roast their own or use a 2nd party roaster?

Ah, the Trident. You either love it or hate it. Attitude? Maybe. Are they syrupy sweet and bending over backward for the customer? Nope. The morning guy is actually a really nice guy if a bit quiet. The only attitude I’ve seen them cop is to people trying to order while talking on their phones. Attitude well placed if you ask me. I go there for the cafe more than the coffee. The after lunch baristas don’t make as good of coffee as the earlier folks. Not every customer service job has to act like they are glad to see you every frickin’ day of the week. Not trying to defend them but I used to think they were snobby too. Over the years I’ve come to appreciate their “realness”.
